MobileIRESS for Blackberry FAQ

  • Q: What is the average data usage of MobileIRESS for Blackberry when watching a list of codes in the Quote screen?

A: It depends on the size of the list and the trading activity of the security codes being watched in the Quote screen. However data usage is usually between 0.5 and 3.5 Kb/Minute, on average ~2 Kb/Minute.
For example: Watching a list of seven frequently traded codes (from S&P/ASX 20) over an hour and a half uses about 210Kb, ~2.3Kb/minute. Watching a single code like BHP.ASX for 10 minutes uses about 6 to 7Kb or ~0.65Kb/Minute.

  • Q: Can I make and receive voice calls while using GPRS?

A: This depends, results may vary, currently voice and GPRS data in blackberry devices are mutually exclusive (Class B GPRS device). Theoretically voice should interrupt the GPRS session, but currently this only appears 100% effective from the handset side. For example, if you are watching a busy watch list in MobileIRESS or downloading a large web page in the web browser then it is unlikely that you'll receive incoming voice calls, but you can make voice calls at any time and the device will suspend the GPRS session. However, if you are watching fewer codes, or codes that aren't heavily traded, there will be more windows of opportunity where data isn't being transmitted for the GPRS session to be interrupted by an incoming voice call. To learn more about class B GPRS devices see GSMWorld.
